National Data on the Implications of COVID-19 for LGBTQ+ Youth

We know that self isolation, social distancing, and worry can be troublesome and nerve wracking. We know that this is all the more true for the youth we serve. According to The Trevor Project, “For LGBTQ young people who are already at greater risk of anxiety, depression, and negative health outcomes, the Coronavirus can exacerbate the challenges they already face. The social distancing and isolation necessary to stop the spread of the virus can also increase the feelings of loneliness and need for support that so many LGBTQ youth experience.”

Fortunately, our Case Management Program here at IYG was designed with the purpose of saving young LGBTQ+ lives and providing support. This is especially important during a health crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic. Our staff continues to provide services to many youth facing difficult challenges including homelessness, food insecurity, anxiety, and uncertainty.

IYG Continues Our Mission

I am so proud that our staff is meeting the needs of the youth we serve. We are still providing basic needs services to youth utilizing our food pantry, laundry facilities, and showers. But what I am most impressed with is our ability to connect with youth virtually. Youth can connect with case managers and staff via video conferencing and calls to access support and other life-saving resources. Our programming staff assures youth that they are not alone by providing our virtual programs, which allows youth to have social connections with peers and staff while practicing social distance. This innovation of Virtual IYG that resulted from a time of crisis can be modeled to support LGBTQ+ youth throughout Indiana going forward.

We need your help to make this happen.

Would you be willing to make a special donation to help support our mission? With the recent CARES Act, donors now have the opportunity to deduct up to $300 in direct donations for the 2020 tax year on top of the standard deduction. This means that for a small contribution to IYG of $37.50/month starting today, you will be eligible to claim the full $300 deduction at tax time.

Thank you for your continued support and friendship. We simply cannot do it without you.

With gratitude,

Chris Paulsen
